Confessions of a fabric hoarder

I finished the second class sample this last Sunday. I even remembered to take it to Ventura Modern Quilt Guild on Monday for show n tell. Seeing it float around in the back of my Mini Cooper all week reminded me that I still needed to take a picture of it and get it up on the blog. The curved geese are fun to do and I think it’s going to be a great class.

During the Olympics I found myself studying the banners. I love all the color and the use of diamonds instead of a traditional square really got me hooked. So I open up the sketch pad and start drawing. Once the cover to the sketch pad closed that project got put on a back burner. A couple of weeks later I was surfing the web and came across this little gem. Did I mention the pattern is a free download? Visit Hoffman fabrics for more info. There are 29 different Bali batiks in the quilt…which makes this gem a semi-precious stone. It sounded like a great excuse for a trip to the local quilt shop. Now, I’ve got the fabric and I printed my pattern so it’s time to get started.

Today I drove to Ventura and picked up Mom and we headed over to the fairgrounds for a local quilt show. We had a wonderful time, saw some beautiful quilts and got in some shopping also. My mother is the person who introduced me to quilting and I can’t thank her enough for being such a major part of my life. While browsing the show Mom ran into the woman who introduced her to quilting. What a small world.

I saw this fabric on the shop hop last weekend. I’m loving it! I’m really not too sure what I would do with it, but, it’s so cute. Love the eggs and the bacon print too. Maybe it’s time to make an apron. I will have to put this onto my shopping list. How much lower in cholesterol can you get?

remodeling
I had to take a few days off from sewing. The bathroom remodel started Monday. I simply wanted to replace the vanity. Sounds simple enough right? Well, that turned into moving the existing plumbing, adding another electrical outlet, a couple(several) holes in the drywall and a broken mirror. I know you’re probably thinking why didn’t he just hire someone? A little blood, a lot of sweat and a few tears later the vanity is installed. I still need to patch the holes and put the tile on the backsplash. I’m guessing that mirror shopping is in the near future also.

With the lovely Spring weather here, the weekend presented the perfect opportunity to go on another shop hop. The Orange County Shop Hop consists 6 shops and it’s ‘do-able’ in a day. Each of the participating shops gave out a free fat quarter (floral themed) and a pattern from each of the shops. Fabric designer, Frances Newcombe, joined us for our road trip. We had an incredible time and got some amazing inspiration from the shops. Did I mention that I bought some fabric? Well, that’s kind of a given. I did practice restraint…that means under 10 yards. I made this little hexie thing when we returned home Saturday night. Not too sure what it will be. My first thought was to make a tote bag. But, I’d like to make something different. I’ll have to think about this one.

I spent today working on one of two samples for an up-coming class. I will be teaching two different techniques for curved flying geese. They are both paper-pieced. This first quilt was real simple and a lot of fun to make. The second sample is on my ‘to do’ list for this week. I’m thinking 24 hours in a day just isn’t enough time to get everything done. Back to the sewing machine.

This is my pal, Macy, AKA Larry. I acquired Macy when she was just 3 weeks old. I was volunteering with the local shelter and they called me with 3 kittens that needed to be 2 lbs. before they could be placed for adoption. Macy and her 2 brothers ate real well for two weeks and then I had to take them back to the shelter for a weigh-in. The boys reached adoption weight and a little girl at the shelter was excited to take them both home. However, my little Macy Grey didn’t gain weight like her brothers and she returned home with me for another two weeks. She really bonded with me and I kept her. Now, Macy is my little sewing friend. When she isn’t laying right in the middle of the project I’m working on, her favorite place to be is right on top of the machine while I sew. She watches what I’m doing and doesn’t seem to be too interested in the needle. Maybe she was a quilter in a past life…

Okay, so last Thursday I was looking around the room at the piles of fabric…they seem to be growing. I’m sure I’m not adding more fabric to what is already an out of control problem. Back to the pile, it’s apparent that some cleaning/organization needs to take place. I started with the scraps and separated them by prints, solids, backgrounds, etc. OMG, that fabric is so cute! I forgot I bought that. As I was sorting away and looking at the solids, I admired all of the different shades of blue. Suddenly, a rotary cutter emerged from nowhere and I began cutting fabric for a new project. At times like this, I wish I had a better attention span. The little voice inside my head was telling me that it’s alright to start a new project, but keep it small. The quilt top was finished by bedtime Thursday night and the original mess is still there. I spent until 11:00 pm Friday quilting the top. It made sense that I would sleep better if I finished the quilting. One final thought….to sleeve or not to sleeve?

My friend, Frances Newcombe, has just released her new line of fabric for Art Gallery Fabrics.  Frances is one of the nicest people you will ever meet.  Her talents have no boundaries.  She is a full time graphic designer, a mother, a wife and an incredible fabric designer.  I’m not too sure where she finds the time.  I can’t wait to get my hands on Cherie..LOL!  Be sure to check her blog out.  Lots of inspiring ideas.Image
