Confessions of a fabric hoarder

Requirements:
3 coordinating fabrics for front
1 coordinating 1/2 yard for back and binding

From the focus fabric, cut a 12 1/2″ square
From one accent fabric cut a 1 1/2″ X 12 1/2″ strip

Tutorial_1

Create the body of the placemat (image 1)

Join the 1 1/2″ X 12 1/2″ strip to one side of the 12 1/2″ square, creating the body of the placemat (image 1).

Cut a 4 1/2″ X 12 1/2″ strip from focus fabric
Cut a 4 1/2″ X 12 1/2″ strip from second coordinating fabric

Fold and press 4 1/2″ X 12 1/2″ strip of coordinating fabric in half, wrong sides together (your piece should be 4 1/2″ X 6 1/4″.) Top stitch 1/8″ from folded edge to finish the pocket piece.

Tutorial_2

Attach pocket panel to body of placemat along accent strip side and stitch (image 2).

Pin 4 1/2″ X 6 1/4″ pocket piece on 4 1/2″ X 12 1/2″ strip of focus fabric, lining up bottom edges. Attach pocket panel to body of placemat along accent strip side and stitch (image 2).

The top of the placemat is finished…it should measure approximately 17 1/2″ X 12 1/2″.
