Confessions of a fabric hoarder

Pineapple Pincushion

Ventura Modern Quilt Guild and Valley Modern Quilt Guild hold monthly challenges for the guild members that are a fun way to get everyone involved. I enjoy seeing and hearing about other peoples creative process, and I love seeing their finished product. Coming up is a pincushion challenge/swap and I usually wait til the last minute but this time I’m ready way ahead of time. You can never have too many pincushions. I will post the paper-pieced temple under the tutorials section for anyone interested.

Pincushion 2

It has been fun making these pincushions. Since they are very small it has been easy to find scraps for these little projects. Those of you who know me know that I love text fabric. The focus fabric in this weeks project is from You & Me by Adornit Girls, Chatter Graph. And the solids are from the Kaufman stash of Kona’s. The block finishes at 4 inches.

I’m surprised by how many pincushions I seem to have. Many were given to me by friends and family and each one holds many memories. With the holidays just around the corner I suppose it would be a great idea to get a jump on things and try to get some of those gifts made. I’m going to try to post a pincushion pattern each week throughout the next few months.

1-4 1/2″ piece for backing

Fiberfil or crushed walnut shell for the filling.

This block measures 4 inches finished size.

Keeping Life Colorful and Controlled

I don’t know about everyone else, but I seem to start twice as many projects as I finish.  What is my motivation to finish these UFO’s?  The obvious would be a restraining order from all quilt shops.  But, that’s not reasonable. Therefore, I will restrict myself to “no more” fabric until at least 4 of my UFO’s are done.  No…I haven’t been drinking!  It’s been almost 2 weeks now since I’ve bought new fabric, but I have to admit, the urge is still there…

Project #1
I decided to go with an easy project before diving into the abyss.  I was making a few pincushions and ran out of crushed walnut shells so I just put the project away.  Made sense to me!  Well, the pincushions are now done.  The problem with that is it has been so long that I can no longer remember whom I was making the pincushions.  Once again, NOT drunk…maybe a little dementia.

Project #2
I found a shoe box in the bottom of the tote that was bursting with green and neutral print fabrics.  Three completed blocks, my hand written directions, and sketches of the block be made.  The blocks are made of half square triangles(HST) and was supposed to be another quick project…Wrong!  I made HST’s for a couple of days before I realized why I put the project away. Now, I’ve started making these blocks again, and I SWEAR, I’m going to finish this quilt top!
