Kept In Stitches

Confessions of a fabric hoarder

Another lazy Sunday…what to do? Let’s go to the Natural History Museum! We’ve both lived here for quite a while, and neither one of us has ever been there. There is a new exhibit of Pterosaurs, so let’s go check it out. We had a great time, and it’s an excellent way to spend a day!

Those UFO’s keep stacking up. I made this table runner for Greg in January of this year. It was intended to be his Valentine’s Day present. I started quilting it on my Bernina domestic machine and I wasn’t happy with the stitches and my pebbles. Not too sure about everyone else, but I would almost rather start over than sit down with the seam ripper and remove stitches. We’ve all heard people say ‘I love to take out stitches’…WTF? Really? Well, I did it! Stitches ripped! I then loaded the project on Johnnie and 30 minutes later all my pebbles are done. The road less taken? I need a new map.

This past month at VMQG we had a zipper challenge. Each person that wanted to be involved was asked to bring in a fat quarter of their own fabric. The fabric was then exchanged to another member and they had creative control to make a zippered item for that person out of their fabric. But it had to include a zipper. I searched high and low for a pattern that I thought to be different and one that nobody else would do. I made Teresa a zippered scissor cozy from the purple batik fabric that she supplied. The fabric I chose was a black graphic fabric and Ann Kaz was the recipient of my fabric. She not only made me an awesome bag , she made an additional mini to match. I love it!

The participation turnout was good and everyone seemed thrilled with the outcome of this challenge.

It’s been a while, but I’m still here…between work and guilds there’s not much time to keep up with the blog. But, I had to share our recent weekend road trip…up the coast to San Luis Obispo and the Madonna Inn for the Seven Sisters Quilt Show. It’s a long drive, but we had a great time in the car, at the show, and visiting a couple of quilt shops on the way. By the way, if you’re ever there, check out Picking Daisies…it’s an awesome little shop with some great people! And, check out Orange Dot Quilt Patterns by Dora Cary…she is amazing! This is just a sampling of the great quilts we saw, and now I can’t wait to start sewing again!

Have I ever told you how much Greg and I LOVE to go on Quilt Shop Hops? It’s a great chance to see new things, meet new people, and find things we haven’t seen before. Recently, Greg found out about the Heart of the Valley Quilt Shop Hop. He read about it on Friday afternoon and by Friday night we had a motel reservation and were ready to leave first thing on Saturday morning. The Hop started in Bakersfield, CA—a little over 100 miles away, and continued through the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. It included 8 shops in Bakersfield, Porterville, Visalia, Reedley, Clovis, Oakhurst, and Turlock. We had an incredible time driving, singing along with the radio, and shopping for fabric and patterns. Thank you to all of the wonderful shops we visited…maybe we’ll see you again next year!

Ahhh…a beautiful, lazy Sunday! We decided to visit an exhibition at the Hammer Museum here in Los Angeles…Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College 1933–1957. When we entered the museum, we were greeted by the street art of Kenny Scharf, a New York street artist, prominent in the 1980’s…lots of fun! Black Mountain College was an experimental college in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. The College gave equal attention to the arts and many influential artists, poets, musicians and performers either taught or were students there. We went to see the work of Anni and Josef Albers, specifically, but were impressed and inspired by all of the work that was produced there. If you’re in LA, it’s worth going to see…the exhibit is free and parking was only $3.00!

Saturday, we headed down to the Ventura fairgrounds to see the Camarillo Quilters’ Association 2016 quilt show, Quilting by the Sea. It was a wonderful day getting to see quilts and spend time with friends. I managed to buy some fabric in the guild’s boutique. Can you believe that? The show had a great balance of traditional and modern quilts. Some amazing vendors, door prizes, fundraising baskets and many silent auctions.

Occasionally, I look around my workspace and see something I forgot about…this is one of those projects. I completed it several years ago, and stored it away, thinking I’d get to it eventually. I wanted to practice on “Johnnie” a little, so I set it up and got to work. It felt great to finish a project. Halloween table runner finished…check!

My cousin, Lindsay, is going to have a baby sometime next month. She already knows that it’s going to be a boy. The new parents have decided to name him River Jack. I absolutely love his name. I love the name so much that I decided to make River his first quilt.

The first quilt I made turned out very different than this one. After consulting with Greg, we decided that the first one was a little too modern and complex for a baby quilt. I really wanted to keep with the water theme and use as many greens and blues as I could. This is one of those projects that I enjoyed from start to finish.
