I’ve had my eye on this sewing machine for awhile now and I decided to take the plunge and treat myself to a new Bernina. Since it is red that was reason enough. Did I need a new machine…No! But I sure do like it. And it looks fabulous in the studio. I hope the other Berninas don’t get jealous.
Never a dull moment around here… Simi Valley Quilt Guild held their Biennial quilt show on Sunday. “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow…Not Just Your Grandmother’s Quilts” was the theme of the show. It was a fun show and I enjoyed seeing quilts done by some of my friends. I bought 3 vintage quilt tops in their guild’s boutique. I don’t really know why…I have enough of my own unfinished projects!
The Simi Valley Quilt Guild invited Ventura Modern Quilt Guild to display modern quilts at their show. I volunteered 6 of my quilts for the modern exhibit.
I drafted up this quilt and put it together in one weekend and the following week I loaded it onto my long-arm quilter, Johnnie. It sat idle for the next 3-plus weeks. True…I’ve been very busy with the guilds, work, and teaching. I knew that I wanted some dense quilting in the negative spaces of the blocks, and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do in those areas. I would go in and stand and stare at the quilt for prolonged periods of time and no inspiration would come to me. I finally jumped in and just started trying things out. And, guess what? It’s finally done…and it’s huge! I couldn’t be happier with it!
Our good friend, Nancy King, recently welcomed her first grandchild into this World. Greg Palmer and I shared the process of making this quilt. We quickly pieced the top and then it took its place in line to be long-armed. The baby is now 6 weeks old and I’m glad we got it to her while she is still a baby. I’ll bet other quilters are turning out baby quilts like mad. This is only the second baby quilt I’ve made this year. I’m rather pleased with how it turned out. I really should try to get a few baby quilts made and ready to be gifts ahead of time. We both hope she enjoys the quilt for years to come, and knows it was made with a great deal of love. Congratulations, Nancy!
The name of the pattern is Claire and it is found in the book Fat Quarter Baby.
These pincushions are just too much fun to make. There is something gratifying about starting a project and seeing it through to completion. I came across this Tim Holtz fabric and fell in love with it. The line is Eclectic Elements by Tim Holtz, Correspondence, Air Mail. I’m now thinking that I also need a tote bag out of this fabric.
It has been fun making these pincushions. Since they are very small it has been easy to find scraps for these little projects. Those of you who know me know that I love text fabric. The focus fabric in this weeks project is from You & Me by Adornit Girls, Chatter Graph. And the solids are from the Kaufman stash of Kona’s. The block finishes at 4 inches.
I’m surprised by how many pincushions I seem to have. Many were given to me by friends and family and each one holds many memories. With the holidays just around the corner I suppose it would be a great idea to get a jump on things and try to get some of those gifts made. I’m going to try to post a pincushion pattern each week throughout the next few months.

Today, I taught an improvisational piecing workshop hosted by Valley Modern Quilt Guild. I really feel fortunate to be a part of a guild that has so many talented and creative people. We had a great time and shared many laughs. Each of the students produced some very different and unique blocks. I’m always amazed and inspired by the creativity that other people possess. A special thank you to CJ Foss for setting up the room for us…it was perfect!
